Animall stores as little as it can: nothing about you when you just look at the animals, and only what an account needs when you vote. No ads, no trackers, and we never sell or share your data.
Who runs Animall
Animall is a personal project of Jasper Pardijs, in the Netherlands. Questions about your data go to hello@animall.app.
Looking at the animals
No cookies and no account needed. To learn how people use Animall, we count each page visit and a few actions: sharing an animal, clicking through to Instagram, YouTube or Threads, signing up, confirming an email address, voting and suggesting an animal. Each count holds only the page and the animal, where the visit came from (one of our channels, or the website that linked to Animall, as its domain name), the country, whether it’s a phone, tablet or computer, and whether someone is logged in. No IP address, no browser details, and nothing that identifies you or links your visits together. The fonts and photos come from Animall itself, not from other companies.
With an account
To vote you need an account. Then we store:
- your email address, to log you in and to send the emails below;
- your password, only in scrambled form (a hash): nobody can read it, not even us;
- your votes: which animal you picked for which day;
- for each login, the IP address and browser it came from, to keep your account safe. A login ends when you log out, or after 60 days, and we keep the list of your logins for 90 days;
- if you turn on the vote reminder, that you did, and the last day one was sent;
- one cookie that keeps you logged in. It’s only there while you’re logged in.
An account whose email address is never confirmed is deleted after a week.
To stop people guessing passwords or flooding someone with email, we briefly count requests per IP address to the log-in and email pages, and for a day we keep a scrambled code of each address we email, so it can’t get too many.
Suggesting an animal
Anyone can search for an animal. We look the name up in our own copy of iNaturalist’s list of animal names, so what you type stays with us. To send a suggestion you need an account. Then we store the animal and when you suggested it, and, if you fill them in:
- why people should meet it. It’s never shown on the site. We only use it as an idea when we prepare the animal, also with the AI assistant that helps us write (Claude, by Anthropic), and never as a source;
- the name to show on its day. If it becomes the animal of the day, its page says it was suggested by that name. You can take your name off on your account page at any time.
The search shows whether an animal has been suggested, never by whom. On an animal’s day, its page shows the name of the first person who chose to show theirs and how many others suggested it.
If you start a suggestion before logging in, your browser keeps it for a day, so it’s still there when you come back. It stays on your device and is removed once you send it.
We email you the link to confirm your address, a link to choose a new password when you ask for one, and once when an animal you suggested joins a vote. Only if you turn it on, we send a reminder at 19:00 on days you haven’t voted yet. And when you haven’t voted or visited all week, we send that week’s animals on Sunday morning: never more than one a week, and after four in a row without a visit we stop until you’re back. Every reminder and catch-up has a link to turn it off, and so does your account page. No other newsletters, and no ads.
Who handles your data
Cloudflare runs the site, sends our emails, and stores the accounts, votes and suggestions in a database in Western Europe. Anthropic’s Claude reads the reasons given for an animal when we prepare it.
Our accounts on Instagram and Threads fall under Meta’s privacy policy, and our YouTube channel under Google’s. Following us there doesn’t give us any data from this site, or the other way round.
Deleting your account
On your account page you can delete your account at any time. That removes your email address, password, logins, votes and suggestions straight away. Past results only keep the vote totals.
Your rights
You can ask what we store about you, and have it corrected or deleted: email hello@animall.app. If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
